Licensing service changes

We have made temporary changes to our licensing services due to the coronavirus - get more details.

Temporary event notices

Temporary event notices may be issued for activities which require a licence on a temporary basis.

How do I apply?

You can apply using the link to GOV.UK above, or download and complete the blank notice at the bottom of the page. Each application costs £21.

One copy of a notice must be given to the licensing team, one to the police, and one copy to the noise team.

We must acknowledge receipt of the notice on the working day after it is received. A copy of the notice must be displayed on the premises during the event.

Limitations

For a temporary event notice to be issued, the following conditions must be met:

  • No more than 500 people (including staff and performers)
  • No more than 168 consecutive hours
  • At least 24 hours between two notices given for the same premises by the same person or an associate
  • Personal licence holders may give no more than 50 standard or 10 late notices per calendar year
  • Others may give no more than five standard or two late notices per calendar year
  • No more than 15 notices may be given for a premises in a calendar year.
  • Notices may be given for no more than 21 days or part days in a calendar year.

Standard notice - at least 10 clear working days before the event

We recommend that you give your notice between one and two months before your event is to take place. The police or our noise team may object if they think the event will affect any of the licensing objectives.

If there is a representation and the matter cannot be resolved informally, there will be a hearing to decide whether it can proceed. It may be allowed to go ahead subject to conditions.

Late notice - between five and nine clear working days before the event

The procedure is similar to that for standard notices, except any representation from the police or the noise team will result in a counter notice being issued to stop the event. Hearings are not permitted for late notices.
