Health and beauty registrations

Anyone providing certain health and beauty treatments must register themselves and their premises.

All business providing the following treatments must register their premises and any persons who carry out the treatment(s) at their premises:

  • Hairdressing
  • Tattooing
  • Body piercing
  • Acupuncture
  • Electrolysis
  • Micro-pigmentation.

The requirement to register extends to mobile hairdressers (person registration only), practitioners working from home and chemists and jewellers providing ear piercing.

What happens if I do not register?

Failure to register could result in you being issued with a court awarded fine of up to £1000.

How much does it cost? 

The registration fee is a one-off payment unless you employ more staff or move premises.

For all hairdressing registrations the fee is £50 per application.

For all other treatments (acupuncture, cosmetic piercing, electrolysis, semi-permanent skin-colouring, or tattooing) the fees are:

  • £120 per premises
  • £90 per persons per treatment.

How do I register?

Hairdressing registrations only

You can register your hairdressing business online through My Account using the following link:

Acupuncture, tattoo, body/ear piercing, electrolysis registrations

Please download and complete the required registration form below and return it with the correct fee to:
Public Safety Team, Leicester City Council, Phoenix House (2nd floor), 1 King Street, Leicester, LE1 6RN.

Alternatively, you can pay using a debit/credit card by telephoning (0116) 454 3192 and then emailing the completed registration form to publicsafety@leicester.gov.uk

What happens next?

Once your form and fee have been received, an officer from the team may contact you to discuss your application and/or arrange an inspection of your premises. You will be issued with a registration certificate which should be displayed on the premises once the officer is satisfied that you are compliant.
