Cycle training in schools

We provide free Bikeability training for school pupils in years 5 to 8. Courses start at beginner level and build to riding safely on the road.

Bikeability is an update on the previous cycling scheme, and contains two levels. Level one covers basic cycling skills such as starting, stopping and signalling and is carried out in your school playground. Level two is carried out in quiet residential streets near your school.

How is the course organised?

Your school should contact us by email cycletraining@leicester.gov.uk, and we will arrange dates for training. Our instructors come to your school before the training takes place to carry out a risk assessment.

On the day of the course, we will supply hi-vis vests to every child and helmets to children without their own.

We prefer children to bring their own bike, but we can supply bikes where necessary. We can also visit your school before training starts to check bikes for road worthiness.

The course runs for four sessions lasting up to two-and-a-half hours, and children need to attend every session to get their award. Each child who successfully completes the course will receive a certificate and badge.

Our instructors have all had an enhanced DBS check, all carry photographic identification, and have basic first aid training.
