Gilroes Cemetery and Crematorium

Gilroes Cemetery is Leicester's largest municipal cemetery. Opened in 1902, it contains Leicester's main crematorium.

Gilroes Cemetery is a beautiful green, welcoming and peaceful place. The mature trees, broad paths and memorials of the cemetery are complemented by the neat headstone rows in the lawn cemetery and the vibrant, aromatic roses in the Garden of Remembrance.

Since opening in 1902 the cemetery has seen more than 130,000 burials and the crematorium is one of the busiest in the country, carrying out more than 3,000 cremations a year.

Following a major improvement project in 2013, the crematorium is now the base for the city council's bereavement services. The building contains public toilets and facilities for record searching.

There is a large public car park to the right hand side of the main drive from the entrance on Groby Road.
