Citizenship ceremonies

If your application to become a British citizen has been successful you will need to book a citizenship ceremony. Becoming a British citizen is a significant event, celebrated with a citizenship ceremony.

Before booking a ceremony date

You should only complete the form if you selected 'Leicester Register Office', as the office you wish to attend for your ceremony when applying for citizenship with the Home Office.

If you’re 18 or over and have successfully applied to become a British citizen, you will need to book a citizenship ceremony.

Are you under 18?

If you are under 18 years old, you do not have to attend the ceremony. You may do so if you wish, or your parent can collect your certificate on the day of their ceremony - if they are also being granted citizenship at the same time as you.

You must book the ceremony within three months of being sent an invitation from the Home Office. This is a legal requirement and if you miss the deadline you may have to apply again.

Can't find a suitable date?

The date(s) stated on the online form are the only ones currently available. If these are not suitable, please check again another time. Further dates are normally updated on Mondays.

How do I book?

To book a citizenship ceremony online, you will need:

  1. Your Home Office reference number
  2. Provide a valid email address – your appointment will be confirmed via email.

Please note, you will be required to create a MyAccount login. The online form will take around 10 minutes to complete.

What to bring on the day

On the day of the ceremony you will need to bring:

  • the original invitation sent to you from the Home Office – you must bring this with you.
  • photographic ID – please bring this as additional identification in case it is required.

If you do not bring the Home Office letter with you, you will not be able to take part in the ceremony and will need to re-book your appointment.

Where and what time will the ceremony take place?

All citizenship ceremonies are held at our Town Hall Register Office:

  • The City of Leicester Register Office, Town Hall, Town Hall Square, Leicester, LE1 9BG.

The ceremony will start at 10.30am and you must arrive 15 minutes before the ceremony begins. If you are late for your ceremony you will not be able to take part, and will have to re-arrange your ceremony.

What happens at the ceremony?

New citizens make a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom, an oath on their Holy book or an affirmation to Her Majesty the Queen. You will be presented with a certificate to celebrate the occasion of becoming a British citizen.

During your citizenship ceremony you will be required to swear an oath or affirm your allegiance to the Queen.

The Oath

I (your name) swear by almighty God that on becoming a British citizen, I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her Heirs and Successors, according to law.

The affirmation

“I (your name) do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that on becoming a British citizen, I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her Heirs and Successors, according to law.

The pledge

I will give my loyalty to the United Kingdom and respect its rights and freedoms. I will uphold its democratic values. I will observe its laws faithfully and fulfil my duties and obligations as a British citizen.

If you are not able to speak or understand English, you will need to bring your own interpreter with you.

Can I bring guests?

You are welcome to bring guests to your ceremony to share the celebration experience; however, space is restricted so we limit the number of guests to two guests per applicant.
