Library FAQs on coronavirus
The situation with the coronavirus COVID -19 is fast moving and affecting all of us. We have addressed some of your library queries.
I’m not currently a Leicester Library member. Can I still join?
While libraries are closed you can join online to receive a temporary library card number and PIN. This allows you to access our Digital Library including all of our eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and eComics. The card will be active for six months after the libraries reopen. Within that time you will need to bring proof of ID to one of the city libraries where your card will be made permanent.
How long will my library be closed?
At the current time it is not possible to say how long your library will be closed, but we will keep our customers regularly updated. Please check our website for updates or follow us on social media.
How do I return my books and other items?
Unless you are using one of our re-opened libraries there is no need to return your library items during this period. All library loans have been extended until 1 October 2020. We will review this date and extend as necessary. Please ignore any overdue emails you may receive, you will not incur any fines during this period of closure.
Will I have to pay extra for audiobooks or DVDs that I have out on loan?
No, any additional charges for these items will be waived when they are returned.
Can I still reserve/request any library items?
We are now offering a pre-order service at the four libraries we have re-opened, whilst you cannot request specific titles our staff can select a range of books for you based on your preferences. More information on this service can be found on our re-opening libraries page.
How do I collect an item I have already put a hold on?
Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide access to items that customers have already reserved. We will keep these for you and you will be able to pick them up when libraries reopen. You can cancel your reservations online if you wish.
eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and eComics
Leicester Libraries offer a wide range of resources available to download onto your smartphone, PC, laptop or tablet. Please go to our eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines page for information on how to use this service.
Can I access Ancestry Library Edition from home?
During the coronavirus situation our members can temporarily access Ancestry online, from the comfort of their own home. This was previously only available via the computers in the Central Library. Many thanks to Proquest, our provider, for this enhanced access. Please login to your library account via our online catalogue and follow the Ancestry link.
How do I find or reset my PIN?
If you have an email registered on your library account, please visit our online catalogue and click on ‘Forgot PIN’.
If you did not register an email address, then please request your PIN through a direct message via our Facebook page.
Are you an existing library member struggling to access our online services?
If you are having problems accessing our online services your card may have expired. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your library card number, address and date of birth. We will check and update your account and email you back within two working days.
We regret that activities in libraries and community centres have been cancelled due to building closures.
