Coronavirus shielding advice
Important advice on coronavirus for those who are shielding in Leicester and surrounding areas.
Working in Leicester
If you are clinically extremely vulnerable, live outside Leicester and work within Leicester, you are advised to work from home or another location where possible and not attend your usual workplace in Leicester. You may need to request a shielding letter as proof for your employer that you cannot attend your usual workplace. This letter can also be used for statutory sick pay purposes where necessary.
To request a shielding letter, email firstname.lastname@example.org and include in your email your full name, address, NHS number and date of birth.
Advice in Leicester
The government is pausing shielding in Leicester from 5 October. They will send new letters over the next few days and possibly texts from the NHS.
Clinically extremely vulnerable people in Leicester are still advised to shield until 5 October.
This means that until 5 October the clinical advice is:
- you are still advised to stay at home as much as possible
- you may, if you wish, meet in a group of up to six people outdoors, including people from different households, while maintaining strict social distancing
- you do not need to observe social distancing with other members of your household
- if you are a single adult household (either an adult living alone or with dependent children under 18), you may, if you wish, also form a ‘support bubble’ with one other household. All those in a support bubble can spend time together inside each other's homes, including overnight, without needing to socially distance.
The updated letter coming from the government will act as evidence for your employer to show that you cannot work outside your home until 5 October, including for statutory sick pay purposes.
All shielding guidance is advisory.
We will update this page with local guidance that will apply after 5 October.
Support to stay at home
From 1 August, weekly food boxes and care has been provided by Leicester City Council. This will end from 5 October, but if you are concerned that you will need help, please email us at email@example.com.
You can also contact the NHS Volunteer Responder scheme for help collecting shopping, medicine or other essential supplies, or just for someone to talk to. You can call them free on 0808 1963646.
