Evacuation and other emergency guidance

We have produced guidance with Leicestershire Police colleagues that highlights advice and a map of the city areas covered by our city centre evacuation plan.

It’s crucial we have plans in place to deal with a major disaster in Leicester, to minimise the risks for people and businesses in the city.

What can you do?

To co-ordinate our response to any incident, we break the city centre up into zones. In the event of an incident, anyone in an affected zone will be evacuated to a place of safety in another zone. You can download our guidance document and zone map at the bottom of the page. Please leave it in a prominent place so all your employees or colleagues can see it.

What happens in the event of an evacuation?

Depending on the emergency, you may be told you need to evacuate by the emergency services, your neighbours, your employer or public address system. Information may also be published on social media, or by local media organisations.

The police and other emergency responders will co-ordinate any evacuation.

What can I do to prepare?

If you live in Leicester city centre, you should check which zone you live in. If you are a city centre business, you should prepare an evacuation plan, and test it with all members of staff to make sure it is effective.

There are a number of issues to consider when preparing your evacuation plan, including:

  • Do your staff know what to do in an emergency, and can they safely reach your assembly point?
  • How do you tell your staff they need to evacuate, and make sure they know where to go?
  • What help will you provide to staff or customers with mobility or sight issues?
  • How will you account for everyone on site at the assembly point?
  • Do you have emergency provisions to hand, such as a mobile phone, keys to the premises, a first aid kit or a copy of your business continuity plan?
  • How will you communicate with your staff while they are out of your premises?
