Garden waste bin

We can collect garden waste, such as leaves, twigs and grass cuttings, fortnightly on Mondays between March and November. Subscriptions need to be renewed every 12 months.

Garden waste service finished for the year

The 2020 garden waste service has now finished, you can renew your service for next year from February 2021 onwards.

You can receive your billing information and collections calendar by email instead of receiving them by post. To go paperless visit the Garden Waste page and select Manage your account to update your preferences.

Please remember that by setting up direct debit we will be able to take your payment on your renewal date and you will receive a £5 discount for the garden waste service.

Garden waste collections

Your green bin will be emptied fortnightly on Mondays. Please check the calendars below for your collection dates.

Account information

Use our account information section to find out if you have set up a direct debit for your account, download your garden waste calendar and check your next collection date. You can also change your account preferences to go paperless so that you receive your billing information and calendar by email. You will need your garden waste customer reference number for this service.

Which calendar applies to me?

  • Calendar A - calendar for customers with Tuesday or Wednesday refuse collections
  • Calendar B - calendar for customers with Thursday or Friday refuse collections

How does the service work?

We will collect garden waste, such as leaves, twigs and grass cuttings, fortnightly on Mondays between March and November. Please place your bin out for collection by 7am on your collection day.

How much does it cost?

  • £51 for a 12 month subscription or £46 for direct debit customers
  • You can sign up for additional bins at a cost of £20 each.

What happens after I have signed up?

After you have signed up, we will deliver a green wheeled bin and a collection calendar.

What can go in the green bin?

  • Leaves
  • Small twigs/branches
  • Hedge trimmings
  • Grass cuttings
  • Weeds
  • Garden and house plants
  • Flowers
  • Bark.

What can’t go in the green bin?

  • Food waste
  • Treated wood
  • Logs/large branches (over 150mm in thickness)
  • Soil or turf
  • Plastic bags
  • Plant pots or seed trays
  • Gravel or stones
  • Pond sludge
  • Animal faeces
  • Dead animals
  • Garden twine
  • Japanese knot weed
  • Biodegradable bags/liners.

Can I put my garden waste into bags before I put it in my bin?

No, all material must be put loose into the bin. The facility the garden waste is sent to, cannot process any plastic bags or compostable/biodegradable bags. 

Can I put extra garden waste at the side of the green bin if it is full?

No, only material contained within the bin will be taken. If you are producing a lot of garden waste you can purchase additional bin subscriptions. 

My green bin hasn't been emptied, even though I put it out before 7am. How do I report a missed collection?

If your bin was put out before 7am on collection day and contained the correct items, you can report that your bin was missed online using My Account

Can I arrange to pay by direct debit?

Please use the quick link at the top of the page to set up a direct debit. 

Renewing your subscription

Subscriptions will need to be renewed every 12 months. Customers are able to renew their existing subscriptions online, using the quick link above.

Please note we will send renewal information to you prior to your renewal date, explaining how you can sign up for another year for the garden waste service.

If you have signed up to an annual direct debit you do not need to do anything, your payment will be taken automatically on your renewal date.

What do I do if I move address?

If you move to another property within Leicester city, please take your green bin with you and continue to use the service. Please notify us of your change of address so that we can continue to empty the bin at your new property. If you are moving to a property outside of Leicester city, please do not take your bin with you - please inform us so that we can collect the bin from your previous address.
