What can I recycle?

In Leicester, we provide orange bags for recycling in houses and small properties, and communal bins for most flats.

What can I put in orange bags?

You can put the following items in your orange bags. Please make sure you rinse all items that contained food or drink - no food waste will be accepted.

  • Plastic bottles and plastic food containers (e.g. margarine tubs, ready meal trays and yoghurt pots)
  • Drink cans, empty aerosols, food tins, foil and foil trays
  • Glass bottles/jars
  • Paper, Newspapers, magazines, junk mail and envelopes
  • Cardboard boxes and packaging
  • Drink/food cartons (e.g. Tetra Pak).

You can download a detailed list of what can and can’t be recycled at the bottom of the page, along with a full guide to your recycling service.

What do I need to do with my recycling?

  • Rinse - please make sure all items that have contained food or drink are clean and dry.

If you have orange bags:

  • Fill up your bags - you can use as many orange bags as you need for your recycling
  • Tie your bags - securely tie the top of the bags, as this helps to reduce litter
  • Collection - put your bags out next to your black bin on your collection day.
  • Large card - flatten large cardboard boxes and place underneath orange bags.

What if I have a communal recycling bin?

Place recycling loose into bins or use transparent carrier bags/bin liners. Orange bags are not issued to residents with communal bins.

Clothes, shoes and other textiles

We do not accept clothing or textiles in orange bags. These should be taken to a local charity shop, clothing bank or the LOROS Reuse shop. Damaged items that aren't suitable for reuse can also be recycled in clothing banks.

Recycling and textile banks

There are a number of recycling banks across Leicester, where you can recycle items such as:

  • Cardboard, paper
  • Mixed glass bottles and jars
  • Clothes, shoes and textiles (fabrics)
