A carer is someone that looks after a family member, partner, or friend with an illness or disability.

Are you a carer?

There are an estimated 6.5 million unpaid carers in the UK. You’re a carer if you provide unpaid support with day to day living tasks or personal care to a family member or friend. Those you care for could be ill, frail, disabled, have poor mental health or a substance or alcohol misuse problem.

Many carers feel that they’re doing what anyone would do in the same situation, caring for a mother, father, wife, husband, son, daughter or best friend, for example.

If you are a young carer, we will try to support you as much as possible with specialised help and advice.
Looking after your own health and wellbeing as a carer
Being a carer can be very demanding, physically, mentally and emotionally. Find out what steps you can take to ensure you look after your own health and wellbeing.
Financial support
There may be financial support available to you because you have given up work to be a carer, or because you have had to reduce your working hours.
Do you need support? Get a carers assessment....
If you are over 18 and look after someone, you now have a right to have a carers assessment if you appear to need support.
Getting someone to speak on your behalf
You can get help with someone to represent your views, secure your right and obtain services you need during your social care assessment/review with care and support planning.
