Community walking project

We’re encouraging you to get healthier and more active and at the same time you'll be helping us find the unmapped city foot and cycle paths for the air quality walking project.

Join our walks

By joining in with our weekly strolls in your local area, you will get the chance to meet new people and you will also be helping us find the unmapped foot and cycle paths in your area. We will use the information we gather to update our journey planner on the Choose How You Move website. In this way, communities can take control of and contribute to their local mapping and routing. You will also receive a free pedometer for taking part.

The walks are suitable for all ages and abilities, although children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Our aims

The overall aim of the project is to encourage an increase in walking and cycle journeys in Leicester.

Both the project process and the outcome are intended to influence behaviour by encouraging active travel directly through:

  • the establishment of walking groups to gather data
  • an improvement of the online journey planner for walking and cycling options.

This, in turn, will support our public health objectives by encouraging people to exercise, by leading a healthier, more balanced and active lifestyle. The project methodology for the walking group element will be based on the model of the Get Walking Keep Walking project (GWKW) which was in place from 2012 to March 2016.

What is Choose How You Move (CHYM)?

The CHYM website provides travel information for Leicester and Leicestershire, with a journey planner which allows residents and visitors to consider the different travel options available to them.

The journey planner offers a variety of travel methods starting with the most active or sustainable travel options.

You can view the Choose How You Move website using the link at the top of this page.

What we learnt from Get Walking Keep Walking

Evidence shows that the use of journey planners changes behaviours.

Monitoring of the projects shows that:

  • approximately 50 per cent of participants taking part in the initial three-year project increased their walking activity, and their use of sustainable transport after a 12-week period.
  • the same percentage sustained this increase after a 6 month period.
  • 44 per cent said their number of car journeys reduced, decreasing only slightly after a six month period.
