A safe and inclusive city

Leicester is globally renowned for its diversity. We are a multi-ethnic city that has welcomed people and communities from all over the world for generations, and we have been proud to continue this in recent years.

In the times we live in, it is more important than ever that our city, with more than 80,000 non-UK residents, continues to provide for everyone who lives here a place that they can call home, regardless of faith or nationality. 

And this needs to be a safe, prosperous home! 

Working with the Police and other partners, our Community Safety and Youth Offending teams collaborate effectively together to make our neighbourhoods safer. 

Our communities are also often supported by voluntary organisations that do brilliant, vital work for our citizens.  We are always looking to find innovative ways to support the voluntary sector, and one way of doing this is through my CrowdFund Leicester initiative, which seeks to better connect people, communities and businesses so that they can turn their ideas into reality. 

To become even more of an inclusive city, I remain committed to finding new ways of engaging with our communities and residents, to ensure that our service delivery is well informed by those it serves.  

My priorities

Community support

  • Keep Leicester a welcoming and supportive place for all residents living and working here
  • Support residents who are not able to apply for benefits or receive services with advice and guidance
  • Make Leicester a place of refuge for those fleeing conflict across the world, with a comprehensive offer of housing, support and learning
  • Support communities to welcome refugees and asylum-seekers
  • Develop and support engagement and community cohesion opportunities in our neighbourhoods by supporting the voluntary and community sector to access grant opportunities 
  • Develop models of improved citizen participation
  • Support communities and citizens to participate in running the city.

Community safety

  • Work with the Police and other partners to establish a city-wide knife crime strategy 
  • Build community partnerships with schools and community organisations to tackle hate crime
  • Work with partners to extend the use of restorative justice
