Interpretation and translation services
We encourage the use of English as the city’s main language, but we make sure where customers would be put at a significant disadvantage without a specific piece of information, it will be provided in a suitable format for them.
There are more than 70 languages or dialects used across the city, including sign language. The number of languages continues to increase as the city’s population becomes more diverse.
The most requested languages for interpretation and translation in Leicester are Gujarati; Urdu; Punjabi; Bengali; Somali; Arabic; Farsi; Polish; Slovak and Chinese.

When do we help?
Guidance has been produced for our staff to help them determine, on a case by case basis, when interpretation or translation is provided. When agreeing to make information available in another format, we will take into account the financial costs, and whether it is practical to do so.
We also provide language and translation services for non-English speakers and people with visual impairment or hearing difficulties to external organisations and to the general public.
