What’s the situation in Leicester?
In Leicester, there are about 2,600 people living with dementia, forecast to rise to around 4,276 people by 2030. Most people living with dementia are over 65 years old but some people are much younger.
What support do we offer?
People with dementia can benefit from specialist care and support. Recently, there has been a shift to a focus on how we can enable people who have been diagnosed with dementia to live as full a life as possible.
Dementia Friends
Dementia Friends is a service which allows people to gain an understanding of dementia and the small ways they can help. Becoming a Dementia Friend is as simple as watching a short online video and attending a face-to-face training session in your local area.
Leicester City Council has pledged to train five hundred staff as dementia friends, as part of our commitment to make Leicester a dementia-friendly city.
Shared Lives
Shared Lives carers work from their own homes to provide day care, short term respite or long term live-in arrangements for adults who have social care needs, including dementia.
Other services
We commission a range of community services for people with dementia and their carers. These include advice, information and advocacy; befriending services to help alleviate loneliness; support for carers, including respite breaks and activity groups; memory cafes, which offer activities to help trigger memories; and training for family carers.
You can find and arrange the services you need through MyChoice - our e-directory.
Support for carers
Further support for carers is available from Carers UK.
Things you can do to help yourself
A diagnosis of dementia does not mean that you have to give up your independence. You can continue to live well. Leading a physically active lifestyle can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of people living with dementia.
Many people living with dementia can live full lives with little or no assistance. The most important thing is to remain positive and look after yourself, for example by eating healthily, taking regular exercise, and keeping active.
Make yourself feel safe and secure by adapting your home, using assistive technology by seeking support, sharing your concerns with your GP and network of family & friends. With the right help and support, you can continue to live in your own home for as long as you are able to.
